Who I am
Oryx is run by Morgan Cole, a sole trader. I am responsible for the personal details described here. Address for service: 16 The Turnbull, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1NA. Contact me at morgan@oryxweb.co.uk.
What I collect and why
When you ask for a preview, I collect your name, your business name, your current website and your phone number or email. I use them to reply to you, to build your preview and, if you go ahead, to put your site live and look after it. My lawful basis is taking steps at your request before a contract, and then the contract itself.
To build a preview, I copy the words and photos on your business’s public website. These can include your name and photo, and your customers’ names in the reviews you publish.
If you become a client, I also keep your invoices and payment records, and what we agree about your site.
Previews nobody asked for
Sometimes I build a preview for a business that hasn’t asked, from its public website, and then contact the owner to offer it. The preview copies what that website already shows. My lawful basis is legitimate interests: offering a business a better website. If you’d rather I didn’t, tell me and I’ll take the preview down and delete it.
Who else sees it
I use a few companies to run Oryx. They handle your details only to provide their service to me:
- Cloudflare hosts this website and the previews, controls who can open a preview, and passes on form messages.
- Zoho runs my email and delivers form messages to me. Form messages aren’t stored on this website.
- Stripe takes payments.
- GitHub stores the files for each website I build.
- Anthropic provides the AI tools I use to build and check websites.
Some of them keep data outside the UK, including in the US. Where they do, they protect it with the safeguards UK law requires for transfers abroad. I don’t sell your details or use them for anything else.
How long I keep it
Enquiries, and previews that don’t go ahead, are deleted 6 months after our last contact. If you tell me you don’t want a preview, I take it offline straight away. Client records are kept for 6 years after our work together ends, for tax and legal reasons.
Cookies
This website doesn’t set cookies or use tracking. If you open a private preview, Cloudflare sets a cookie that keeps you signed in to it.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your details, ask me to correct or delete them, or object to how I use them. If you are unhappy with how I handle your details, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
